Celebrate Dr. Seuss, The Lorax and Reading Today

Celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday March 2 by joining book lovers and the Carlsbad City Library for Read Across America day.

Share your plans for celebrating Read Across America Day with Patch or on the Read Across America pledge site. Now in its thirteenth year, thousands across the country participate in Read Across America Day with the goal of motivating youth to read.  

In Carlsbad, head over to the Friday at 3:30 p.m. for a special Dr. Seuss birthday celebration featuring storytime with guest readers including members of the Carlsbad City Council.

Kids and their families can enjoy a visit from the Cat in the Hat and a Seuss-themed cake at the celebration. The Seuss Celebration takes place in the library's Gowland Meeting Room, located at 1775 Dove Lane.

This year, the National Education Association, a group of more than 3.2 million educators who work to improve public schools, and several literacy and youth groups, are calling on book lovers around the nation to take up The Lorax, the popular Dr. Seuss children's book published in 1971 about the lovable creature who fights to save the environment. 

The Lorax film opens nationwide March 2, and Universal, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, and Random House have joined NEA's Read Across America, creating new posters and classroom guides for the campaign.

NEA and Lorax' publisher, Random House, also have lesson plans and lots of other materials, resources and printable activities for teachers, parents and kids.
