CHS students and staff returning from Winter Break on Jan. 9, 2012 will be eager to enter their bright and shiny new spaces and ready to show off their campus at the open house. Over the past several months, as many as 100 workers have been daily toiling to complete all work on Buildings 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000, including installation of cutting-edge technology. They also have been completing the wide, welcoming Lancer Walkway, the inviting landscaped courtyards and the beautiful, spacious Lancer Plaza, which is sure to become a popular destination for studying, eating, meeting and mingling.

District Superintendent John A. Roach, Ed.D., states, “The completely transformed campus is undeniably beautiful, but the beauty is much more than skin-deep. We are reinvigorating the venerable Lancer spirit and offering students the 21st-century framework they will need to succeed in college and career. We look forward to presenting the new site to the many people who helped make this transformation a reality.”

District Thanks Community for its Strong Support

The massive CHS renovation process began in November 2006, when voters overwhelmingly approved the $198 million Proposition P General Obligation Bond Measure by a 69 percent vote. Prop P funds, along with $39 million in State funds, were earmarked to modernize Carlsbad High, create new at College Boulevard/Cannon Road, modernize several elementary and middle schools, and upgrade District-wide technology.

The total modernization of 53-year-old Carlsbad High will cost approximately $90 million.

In addition to the new classrooms and other above-mentioned features, also completed recently were the new wrestling building, installation of equipment in the nutritional services facility, wireless technology and computer upgrades in existing Buildings 2000 and 3000, and renovation of restrooms and installation of new bleachers in the new gym. By next spring, when the new 440-space parking lot is created, CHS construction will be essentially complete except for the removal of relocatable classrooms. That final project will be accomplished once Sage Creek opens to students in Fall 2013.

Dr. Roach reports, “Carlsbad High construction began in 2008. We appreciate the patience of staff, students and families, neighborhood residents, motorists in the vicinity and the entire community during what has been a hectic process at times. We are certain that once people experience the campus on January 12th, they will feel that the endeavor has definitely been worth it.”

Joking that people should wear not rose-but purple-colored glasses to view the bright hues, Dr. Roach concludes, “I am so proud of what we as a community are doing for our children and for all of Carlsbad.”
