Jefferson First Graders LOVE Fish Lab [Video]

Jefferson Elementary school teacher Arlene Gnade brought everything from frozen barracuda to leopard sharks to stingrays to school so students could scientifically study them.

First grade teacher Arlene Gnade’s husband is a fisherman. She saves some of his catches in her freezer to use specifically for fish lab at Jefferson Elementary.

"For two hours our first graders have been working harder than they’ve ever done in a classroom. They think they are having a party. They are totally engaged and that’s what you want learning to be, fun and engaging," said Gnade.

The fish are set up around stations. Students use tools like microscopes and rulers to study them and record information in their workbooks. The fish lab is a hands-on ways of learning about the ocean and different eco-systems, added Gnade.

Out of all the fish in the lab, students were most excited about the barracuda.
