La Costa Canyon Climbs Out of Deep Hole to Claim CIF Lacrosse Title

Mavericks shock Torrey Pines in overtime 8-7 in San Diego section Division I championship.

La Costa Canyon’s Tom Riis scored four goals, including one with 14 seconds to go in the fourth period, to force sudden-death overtime and lead the Mavericks to an 8-7 victory over Torrey Pines in the CIF San Diego Section Division I lacrosse title game. But it was junior Aaron Loy who scored in OT—with 20.7 seconds left—to cap a stunning comeback from a 7-4 deficit at Westview High School. “I dodged down the alley, saw a space, put it in the mixer and just shot,” Aaron told U-T San Diego. LCC (22-1) won its fifth section title in boys lacrosse.
