Look Out Tony Hawk, Here's Carlsbad's Next Skateboarding Star

Rylan Mancilla is already shredding at the age of six.

Rylan Mancilla has only been hitting the skate parks for nine months, but the 6-year-old already has some serious skills.

“I love it because I like trying new tricks,” said Rylan, who will be a second grader at . “I saw videos of kids who were really good skateboarders and I wanted to do it too!”

“It’s more of an addiction,” said Mally Mancilla, Rylan’s mother.“If he could, he would be at the skate park 24/7.”

Rylan has started dropping into bowls that are up to 11 feet deep at the YMCA in Encinitas.

“He’s only 4 feet tall,” said Mancilla. “It’s a little nerve wrecking but I’m so glad he has found something he’s passionate about. He also does very well academically.”

Rylan says his favorite subjects are math and reading, and he also loves to write. He plans to take his homework to the skate park and is hoping to be a sponsored skateboarder by the time he turns ten.

His key to awesomeness?

“I have a routine and I make sure I get my schoolwork done. I come to the skate park every day to practice and that takes dedication.”
