Selecting Sage Creek High School as the name was a process of elimination for the Carlsbad Unified School District board of trustees. After getting more than 200 from the public, they first ditched name nominations that had the same initials of Carlsbad High School. They next eliminated names that were already taken by other schools in the surrounding counties. Acronyms were also taken into account—they steered away from any initials that could have bad implications.
Assistant Superintendent Suzanne O'Connell, who explained the reasons behind the , said, “We focused on the environment. The new school is LEED certified, and we wanted to show those values in the name.”
The board then voted the name Ridgeview off the list, agreeing it was too close to and Ridgemont High School from the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Sunset Hills was voted out because a Sunset High School already exists in the area. Foothills High School was tossed out and then the only choices were Sage Creek High School or names involving Calavera. After much debate, the board voted for Sage Creek.
