South Seniors Storm Away From North in All-Star Girls Game

Spring Valley, Coronado, Poway and Carlsbad among towns supplying stars at Horizon High event.

The scoring drought was of biblical proportions, and it allowed the South side to rise to victory during the San Diego Girls' Senior All-Star Game, played Friday night at Horizon High School.

Paced by Jessica Harris' (Granite Hills) 17 points, the South used a balanced attack and pressure defense to hold the North to only six points in the first 13 minutes of the second half, as they cruised to an easy 91-59 win.

senior forward Shay Young, who will attend New Mexico State University in the fall, finished with 7 points for the South. Danielle Dahle, a senior, who was on the original roster for the all-Star game, did not participate.

The North started the game strong. Bridget Whitfield (La Costa Canyon) scored the games' first six points. Vista's Mikaela Stanton nailed two early 3-pointers, as the North charged to a 16-9 lead.

But an 8-1 run by the South tied the game with 12:30 left in the first half. The South then turned up the D, getting several steals that led to easy leak out buckets by Harris and Cardedra Evans (Mater Dei.)

Trailing 42-33 at the half, the North side couldn't put any offense together. They went through an epic scoring drought, making only one free throw in nine minutes of action. When Mt. Carmel's Erica Lohrenz made a three-pointer to end the streak, it was already 73-42, with about 7 minutes left.

Whitfield finished with 16 points and won MVP honors for the North. Jessica Harris won the MVP for the South team.

In the Girls' 3-Point Contest, Harris made her first nine shots in the first round to finish with 14 points and reach the Finals. She was joined there by Bryn Stark of the Bishop's school, who had 13 points in the first.

Stark took home the title as she equaled her efforts scoring 13 in the Finals. Harris finished with 10.
