Slain CHS Teacher Jason Harper's Legacy Lives on Through Scholarship Fund

Jason Harper memorial scholarship is set up through Carlsbad High School and will be given yearly to a CHS student who excels in math, volleyball or both.

Carlsbad High School teacher and volleyball coach Jason Harper was killed Aug. 7 leaving behind his three children; then ages 8, 6 and 19 months.

Jason Harper's family set up an account at Wells Fargo called the "Harper Education Benefit Fund" to help pay for the education expenses of his children Jake, Jackie, and Josh when they got older.

Recently, a fundraising event was held to raise money for the fund for the Harper children and to raise money for the Jason Harper Memorial Scholarship which will be given yearly to a CHS student who excels in math, volleyball or both.

Andy Tomkinson told Carlsbad Patch, "The Jason Harper Scholarship Fundraiser was a great success. Over 80 people attended. There were poker and bunco tournaments, a raffle and silent auction."

The event raised $3,700 for the scholarship and $1,005 for the education benefit fund.

Tomkinson said they are already planning for another fundraiser next year and hoping to have more sponsors and donations.
