The 31st annual Carlsbad Triathlon, featuring a 1,000- meter open-ocean swim, a 25-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run, is scheduled for this morning.
About 1,000 participants are scheduled to race, with the start set for 8 a.m. at Tamarack State Beach off Carlsbad Boulevard.
The city-sponsored triathlon, which attracts world-class athletes looking to stay sharp, is considered a good one for beginners, because the course is relatively flat.
Last year's winner, Chris Kemp of Australia, finished in about one hour and 10 minutes. The top woman, Heather Jackson of Carlsbad, came in five minutes later. She plans to defend her title.
