1000 Athletes Compete in Carlsbad for Annual Triathlon

On your mark, get set, go! It's that time of year where athletes come to Carlsbad to swim, bike and run to the finish line.

The 31st annual Carlsbad Triathlon, featuring a 1,000- meter open-ocean swim, a 25-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run, is scheduled for this morning.

About 1,000 participants are scheduled to race, with the start set for 8 a.m. at Tamarack State Beach off Carlsbad Boulevard.

The city-sponsored triathlon, which attracts world-class athletes looking to stay sharp, is considered a good one for beginners, because the course is relatively flat.
