CIF Baseball: Top-Seeded LCC Downs Patrick Henry
Swart tosses a three-hitter, striking out 12; Carlsbad blanked by Division I top seed Rancho Bernardo.
Left-hander Trent Swart went the distance on a three-hitter while striking out 12 as top-seeded La Costa Canyon downed Patrick Henry 7-1 Wednesday in first-round action in the Division II baseball playoffs. Swart improved his record to 8-1. Matt Hall and Phillip Evans each drove in a pair of runs for the Mavericks (25-6), who will host East County's Steele Canyon on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
In Division I, Poway (23-8), which needed to win a play-in game as the No. 5 seed in the Division I baseball playoffs, upset No. 4 Vista behind the pitching of Chad Etchison, who tossed a five-hitter and struck out six in improving his record to 7-0. Derek Hasenbeck's two-run double keyed a four-run seventh inning for the Titans that broke open what had been a 1-0 game.
The Titans advance to Friday's second round, where they will host Palomar League rival and top-seeded Rancho Bernardo at 3:30 p.m.

Andrew Daniel had a triple, home run and five runs batted in and starter David Gabel allowed just two hits over six innings as Rancho Bernardo blanked Carlsbad 14-0 in another opening round game.
Max Homick added a home run and four RBIs as the host Broncos (24-6) scored four runs in the third and eight in the sixth.
