Going 3D at National University's Golf Swing Lab

An inside interactive looks at the Golf Academy's Swing Lab.

On the second floor of National University in Carlsbad, you'll find the Golf Academy and a high-tech Swing Lab. Director of Instruction Ted Norby puts students into 3D motion technology using "the same stuff that EA sports does when they throw Tiger Woods in a video game."

Students get outfitted from head to toe with specialized sensors and hold a club with sensors. They hit the ball as they normally would. The walls of the Swing Lab look like a golf course. There is net to hit the golf balls into as well as a putting hole.

Two cameras record all movements. The student can then be seen on a screen in both 3D and 2D. Ted can show you how your swing looks compared to the pros and compare past swings to track improvement.

Golf Academy student Andrew Bogan is getting a sports psychology degree at National University and says the swing lab is helpful. "I came here with a very homemade swing and it's getting better and better as each week comes." Sarah Castillo, an associate professor in the Department of Psychology says, "The best part about it is someone can use what they're learning in the classroom and apply it to something they're doing everyday. The best way to reinforce things is to apply them to what you're passionate about."

The Swing Lab is also open to nonstudents. Ted offers private lessons, golf clinics and instruction outside the lab at the range and on courses. To see costs for golf clinics and player development programs click here.
