It's Top-Ranked LCC Girls vs. San Diego in Hoop Final

The Mavericks use a 24-2 first quarter to run away from Escondido in a 76-34 semifinal victory.

It will be the 2010 champion vs. the 2009 title holder when San Diego High faces La Costa Canyon Saturday in the CIF San Diego Section girls Division I basketball championship game.

The top-seeded Mavericks raced to a 24-2 lead after one quarter on their way to a 76-34 win over visiting Escondido High on Tuesday night, setting up the 6 p.m. Saturday showdown at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion with the second-seeded Cavers, who beat Poway 72-58.

LCC (27-3) has now won 16 straight games, with the three losses to teams outside of San Diego County.

Econdido had just two free throws to show for the first eight minutes, and didn't sink its first field goal until more than three minutes into the second quarter. The Mavs held a 40-15 halftime lead.

Jen Dumiak led LCC with 23 points, including 12 in the opening quarter. Madisen Irwin used her 6-4 height to score 12 points and haul down 22 reboundsin less than three quarters of play. Bridget Whitfield and Nina Martin both added 12 points.
