LCC Advances, Lancers Lose in Girls Hoop Playoffs

Mavericks rout San Pasqual 60-26 to reach semis, Carlsbad falls to Poway 56-36.

The top-seeded La Costa Canyon High girls basketball team improved to 26-3 with and easy 60-26 win over San Pasqual Friday night in the CIF San Diego Section Division I quarterfinals.

Carlsbad High wasn't as fortunate, falling to third-seeded Poway 56-36. The Lancers finish the season at 16-11, while Poway advances to play at second-seeded San Diego in Tuesday's semifinals. La Costa Canyon will host Escondido, which knocked off fourth-seeded Mission Hills in the other semifinal game.

Jen Dumiak paced the Mavericks with 26 points, with Madisen Irwin adding 12 points and 15 rebounds. Bridget Whitfield also helped out on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds.

Poway (25-4) has now advanced to the semifinal round in 16 of 24 seasons under veteran coach Jay Trousdale.

"The Division I playoffs are traditionally the toughest division from top to bottom every year,'' Trousdale told the North County Times. "To get there consistently is a true testament to the program and the girls who have helped make it.''

Katie Kuklok had 23 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, to lead Poway. Alexa Brunansky added 16 points. Bree Jemison was Carlsbad's high scorer with 18, half her team's total.

In the girls soccer quarterfinals, San Dieguito Academy fell to Cathedral Catholic 4-0 to finish the season at 10-10-2.
