The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation is holding the run and celebrating Lagoon Day in July to commemorate the July 12, 2006 anniversary of the declaration of eradication of Caulerpa taxifolia by the CA Dept of Fish and Game. Caulerpa taxifolia is a genetically modify version of tropical saltwater seaweed designed for aquarium use, that when released into the natural environment, has no natural predators and can cause biological, environmental and economic havoc. This has happened, and is happening, in the Mediterranean Sea and also SE Australia. Our lagoon was nearly shut down, however we eradicated the Caulerpa and now the lagoon remains open to support marine resources and also a wide range of in-water recreational opportunities. The global precedent associated with our lagoon foundation is part of our educational and outreach efforts - the Lagoon Day Tip Top Run celebrates our healthy lagoon; our healthy community.

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, a non-profit 501c3, operates the Discovery Center, an extraordinaire collection of hands on nature activities that allow visitors to “taste nature” experiencing both the lagoon and the ecological reserve that resides in Carlsbad. We are located on Eastern end of the lagoon, and operate this amazing teaching hub for all of North County open six days a week.  This beautiful community nature center hosts an award -winning Environmental Education School Program, as well as lectures, bird walks, festivals and events through out the year.  As a non-profit, the lagoon foundation relies on support of the community through membership and attending events like the Tip Top Run to thrive.
