Carlsbad Family Hiking 211 Miles in Loved One's Honor

Aron Gunner died at age 23 in a car accident, it was his dream to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.

Aron Grunner graduated from Valley Middle School, CHS and SDSU. Aron had a degree in communications and loved the outdoors.

Two months after graduating college, Aron passed away in a car crash.

His family created the Aron Gunner Memorial Scholarship Foundation in his honor. The foundation benefits Carlsbad High students who demonstrate a love of community, family and friends, with a bit of adventure and further pursuits in higher education.

To raise money for the foundation and to carry on Aron's love of hiking, Aron's brother Cory and father Bryan will be hiking the John Muir Trail starting July 19th through August 6th. The 211 mile hike starts in Yosemite Valley and finishes at the top of Mt. Whitney. "Getting off of Mt. Whitney is not factored into the total mileage," added Bryan. On the 14th day of hiking, Cory and Bryan will be re-supplied by Aron's former roommates who will continue along and summit Mt. Whitney with them.

"We are looking for ways to turn our grief into something positive, that will help others, and give back to the Carlsbad community that so much helped to define who Aron was. We know he would be excited and well pleased to know that our family carries on in his memory, assisting students from his own high school," said Bryan.
