The Vitamin D Flu Season Defense

Studies are showing that a daily of dose of vitamin D may help fight off the flu.

In the midst of the flu season more people are in search of a pure, holistic way to prevent the flu and to remain healthy.

Overwhelming studies continue to point toward vitamin D to protect against the seasonal cold and flu. As a matter of fact, those who avoid the sun or frequently apply heavy amounts of sunscreen, live in higher latitudes, and eat little or no seafood may have low levels of vitamin D.

“People who have an insufficient level of vitamin D are more susceptible to the flu and seasonal colds,” said Nutrilys Del Mar’s spokesperson. “The best way to find out if you are vitamin D deficient is to ask your doctor for a vitamin D blood test.”

For those who need to build up their vitamin D shield, health care professionals suggest adding fish to their weekly diet, 15 minutes of sun exposure without sunscreen to promote vitamin D, and taking a daily vitamin D supplement dosage.

And the best vitamin D supplement is a marine-based supplement.

“We never recommend synthetic vitamins, because they are just that, synthetic,” said the spokesperson. “The best thing to put in our bodies is a pure and natural source of vitamin D and we offer a magnificent soft gel formula from wild Alaskan sockeye salmon oil.”

Nutrilys Del Mar, based in Carlsbad, provides a whole, non-distilled and cold filtered Vitamin D3 supplement.  The creation of this supplement allows the body to easily and readily absorb all the good that vitamin D3 has to offer.

Another fantastic perk is that salmon oil is rich in omega-3s.

“There have been numerous clinical trials on vitamin D and its anti-influenza capabilities,” said the spokesperson.  “One in particular was an in-depth study championed by Mitsuyoshi Urashima by the Division of Molecular Epidemiology and branched with the Department of Pediatrics at the Jikei University School of Medicine Minato-Ku in Tokyo.  This study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that vitamin D was highly effective at warding off influenza in children.”

In addition to helping keep children, adults, and seniors healthy during the flu season, vitamin D also promotes the following:

  • Bone strength
  • Immune system
  • Brain function
  • Fetal development
  • Neuromuscular function

“The bottom line is that vitamin D is essential to human life because it has been proven time and time again to decrease disease, including influenza,” said the spokesperson.
