Carlsbad Ed Foundation Announces Increase in Summer Classes

Proceeds Enable CEF to Fund District-Wide Music, Hands-On Science & Educational Innovation

Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF), a non-profit organization devoted to developing and funding educational and enrichment programs for nearly 11,000 Carlsbad students, announces the full slate of classes available this summer for its annual CEF Summer Academy, Summer Enrichment, and Kids’ Care “Discovery Zone” Programs.

Together these programs offer area students entering grades K-through-12 a robust curriculum of educational and enrichment opportunities at a time when state budget cuts have eliminated many programs. Funds received from participation in these summertime offerings go toward supporting CEF’s school year, grant-funded initiatives, including district-wide music, hands-on science and educational innovation.

Summer Academy: Giving High School Students a Jump on the School Year

In its third year, the CEF 2013 Summer Academy provides a variety of courses for academic advancement and credit as well as personal development. These classes, which were designed by CEF for students going into grades 9-through-12, are structured to help students earn credits now to gain greater scheduling flexibility during the school year.

Classes include Geometry, Physics, Biology 1, World History, U.S. History, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, American Sign Language 1, English 4, Computer Science, Digital Photography, PE 1, PE 2, Art 1, and Algebra 1.  These full-year (10 credits) courses are taught in a six-week period starting Tuesday, June 18th through Friday, July 26th.

Additionally, semester-long courses (five credits) in Economics, Government, PE I and PE II, and a Calculus Bridge class are available in three-week sessions during this time. Also offered are two non-credit SAT Test Prep courses.

All credit classes will be held at Carlsbad High and the deadline for Summer Academy registration is June 7th. Tuition for 10-credit courses is $495 each and five-credit courses are $249. Classes typically meet Tuesdays through Fridays, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. For more information, including full course descriptions and registration details, visit www.CEFAcademy.org. Summer Enrichment for Grades K-9 Grows in Size and Scope

Registration is now open for the fifth annual Summer Enrichment Program, with the largest and most exciting roster of courses yet. Designed for grades K-through-9, a total of 60 sessions include popular returning classes, such as Video Game Design, Jr. Authors, Digital Photography, and Lego Robotics, as well as new entries like FX Camp/Movie Makeup, Karate, Jr. Broadcasters, Petite Picassos, Rockets and Racers, and more.  Classes will be held at Jefferson Elementary and Pacific Rim Elementary.

Summer Enrichment classes are offered in six, week-long sessions, starting Monday, June 24th through Friday, August 2nd. The half-day courses range in fees from $125 to $175 per week. Registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis with discounts for multiple children or classes. Students must register based on the grade they will be entering in the fall. Popular Kids’ Care Program Helps Busy Parents this Summer

In addition to Summer Enrichment at Jefferson and Pacific Rim Elementary, CEF is offering a summertime extension of its popular Kids’ Care Program. With different weekly themes, this year’s program is called “Kids’ Care Discovery Zone” with students engaging in a wide variety of activities centered on science, technology, and math alongside of regular arts, crafts, and creative play.

Children can be enrolled in Kids’ Care alone or before or after Summer Enrichment classes, with care provided from 7:00 a.m. to 6:25 p.m. each weekday. Combining these two programs represents a great opportunity for working parents to let their kids enjoy a full-day program of fun and enrichment.
