Doggy Einstein Solves Math Questions for Carlsbad Kids

Cookie performed at Carlsbad City Library Learning Center on March 15.

Cookie, a curly black 12 and a half-year-old rescue dog is one smart cookie. She can add, subtract, multiply & divide by barking the correct answer. She can also do this whether the question is asked in English or Spanish, although not sure if that matters since Cookie is deaf.

Penny Miller, Cookie's owner swears there are no signals communicated between them, "she reads my mind as long as I think of the correct answer."

Miller said she discovered her dog had talent a several years ago. "I was watching Petstars on Animal Planet one evening and a Jack Russell Terrier was counting with her paw. I told Cookie that 'I bet you could do that.' She started barking when I would ask her her age and simple addition. Then we advanced to subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots and even simple algebra."

Cookie has appeared on national and regional TV stations. Miller started a non profit and through donations hopes to have Cookie continue performing at Southern California schools, senior centers, expos and children's library programs. She also hopes to encourage others to save shelter animals.
