A unique fundraising event sponsored by the Friends of Cardiff and Carlsbad State Beaches (FCCSB) brought in more than $13,000 on Saturday, July 16.
The "Christmas in July" event took place at the , and Santa Claus himself came to help greet guests and hand out prizes and gifts to the kids who were there to see him. Those who bought raffle tickets had a chance to win a new surfboard or a chance at a free weeklong stay at the campground.
This is the fourth annual event to raise funds for the campground. Bill Mahoney, the founder of FCCSB, said the money raised by last year's fundraiser has been spent on new mirrors in the campground's bathrooms and new windows for the lifeguard office. But the biggest improvement project they worked on in the past few months was creating a new bluff-top campsite called "Pelican Point." It has a new stage area built by volunteers which can be rented for weddings, receptions, business meetings, etc.
