The Japanese Sister City Delegation Leaves Carlsbad with Community Gifts

In its 23rd year, the Carlsbad Sister City program says hello and goodbye to another group of ambassadors.

On March 23, five ambassadors from Carlsbad's sister city—Futtsu, Japan—. A short six days later they were attending a goodbye party. During their trip, the group enjoyed such activities as ,, , Balboa Park, the Japanese Friendship Garden, the Prado, and some went to . The community of Carlsbad helped make their last night here a special one.

Tuesday evening, Qualcomm paid for Hungry Hunter Steakhouse to cater a barbecue held at the Carlsbad Senior Center.

During the goodbye dinner, they were presented with several gifts. One gift was from La Costa Heights Elementary school which raised $1,000 for the group to bring back home and use to help with the . Students raised the money several ways, including collecting spare change and earning cash by recycling.

Girl Scout and Junior Ambassador Andrea Abeyta of Cadette Troop 1623 with Calavera Middle School gave the group “Carlsbad in a suitcase.” The troop packed a bag full of items that represent Carlsbad. In the bag were cutouts of local celebrities such as Shawn White and items such as a sand dollar found on the beach.

The troop has been busy all year to help fund its 2011 summer trip to Europe; the girls will visit Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic—Carlsbad's other sister city.
