Week Ahead: What's Happening in Carlsbad Holiday Edition

Here's a look at some of the events taking place this week in town.

Have a kid ages 5-14 at home with no plans for Thanksgiving break? Consider enrolling him or her in Ninja Camp at AK Martial Arts & Fitness. The camp runs Nov. 25-27.

The eight-day Jewish holiday celebration of Chanukah begins at sundown on Wednesday. Jews light candles every night during the holiday to celebrate the religious freedom won after a battle that liberated the ancient temple in Jerusalem. The holiday comes unusually early this year, and some have dubbed it “Thanksgivukah” as a result.

This holiday season, Westfield North County is also celebrating Chanukah through a partnership with the Chabad of Poway to host a menorah lighting ceremony each evening, beginning November 27th through December 4th. At sundown on December 1st the center will invite guests for a Grand Chanukah Celebration where they will enjoy a brief history of Chanukah, games for children, treats and more.

Thanksgiving is Thursday. It’s hard to believe that anyone would be unaware of the quintessential American holiday, but just in case we’re mentioning it.

Instead of doing the dishes this year for Thanksgiving, you could go out instead. Twenty/20 is hosting a special feast. More details are here: Thanksgiving Dining Made Easy at TWENTY/20

San Diego is a popular destination on Thanksgiving. If you’re overwhelmed with holiday guests, consider making reservations for your Thanksgiving meal at one of these landmark restaurants recommended by the San Diego Tourism Authority.

If you’re driving over the holiday, remember to buckle up and don’t drink alcohol. The California Highway Patrol will engage in a Maximum Enforcement Period from 6 p.m. Wednesday through midnight Sunday. Last year, there were 44 people killed in collisions during the Thanksgiving holiday in California.

Black Friday is traditionally the day after Thanksgiving, but many retailers are starting early, before the turkey is even put away. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, is kicking off its Black Friday sales at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
