Carlsbad Playreaders presents romantic comedy "It Had to Be You" on Dec. 2.

Join Carlsbad Playreaders on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of romance and comedy. It Had to Be You, by Joseph Bologna and Renee Taylor, has been hailed as “sweet, funny and sassy” by the New York Post.

It’s Christmas Eve in New York City when failed actress Theda Blau (Dana Hooley) holds successful director Vito Pignoli (Bernard X. Kopsho) hostage in her apartment and tries to convince him to revive her career. We get to revisit the playwrights' hilarious retelling of their own courtship, because Bologna and Taylor first met when she auditioned for him. The two were married in 1965 and have both enjoyed extensive movie and television careers as actors. It Had to Be You will be directed by Carlsbad Playreaders Artistic Director Maelyn Gandola.

"I’ve always loved how the holidays seem to bring out our finest qualities,” Gandola recently remarked. “It Had to Be You is a regular Christmas cooker, creating some serious chemistry as the characters launch spitballs, spar and spit-take. It’s a fast, sweet and occasionally surreal comedy. Which really does feel like being home for the holidays."
